This Tuesday marks the deadline for submitting applications under the Government’s extraordinary migrant regularisation process, one of the most significant immigration measures introduced in recent years and one which, according to the figures available so far, has far exceeded all initial expectations.

What was initially conceived as a process to regularise the status of approximately half a million people has ultimately mobilised hundreds of thousands of applicants across Spain. The latest estimates suggest that the total number of applications could exceed one million submitted cases.

Beyond the political and social significance of the process, these figures reflect a clear reality: there is a substantial number of foreign nationals seeking to obtain regular administrative status and secure residence and work authorisation in Spain.

A process that has exceeded all expectations

Since the procedure opened on 15 April, law firms, social organisations, trade unions and immigration offices have handled an extraordinary volume of applications.

The regularisation process is aimed at foreign nationals who entered Spain before 1 January 2026 and can demonstrate a minimum period of continuous residence in Spain, together with the other requirements established under the procedure.

In many cases, obtaining certain documents has complicated the application process, particularly criminal record certificates issued by the applicant’s country of origin, one of the documents responsible for the greatest delays in recent weeks.
