The European Commission has confirmed the official date for the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES): it will come into force on October 12, 2025. This marks a key change in border management for third-country nationals traveling to the European Union for short stays.

What is the EES and what is it for?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new European database that will electronically record the time and place of entry and exit of third-country nationals entering the Schengen area.

“The EES will automatically calculate the length of authorized stays, improving the management of migration flows and facilitating border control.”

This system will replace the current manual passport stamping method.

Who does it affect?

From October 12, 2025, the EES will apply to all third-country nationals (non-EU) entering the Schengen area for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Which countries are participating?

The EES will apply in all Member States that are part of the Schengen Agreement, including:

  • All EU countries (except Ireland, which is not participating)
  • Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein
  • Denmark, which participates with certain conditions
  • Cyprus, which will join once it meets the technical requirements
