The story of MUJI Spain

MUJI (Mujirushi Ryōhin, 無印良品) is one of the most globally recognized Japanese brands, known for its minimalist design, functionality, and sustainability. Founded in 1980, it now operates more than 1,300 stores across over 30 countries and offers a wide range of products including home goods, fashion, cosmetics, stationery, and food.

In Spain, the company began operations in 2005 and, following the acquisition of its subsidiaries by the Japanese parent company in 2015, became a wholly owned subsidiary of MUJI Japan, marking a significant leap in the financial, accounting, and tax standards required.

Since 2016, MUJI Spain has relied on Adlanter to support this process, building a strategic relationship based on service quality, timeliness, and trust.

International financial management as a strategic challenge

The full integration of MUJI Spain into the group’s global structure posed a major challenge: adapting local accounting and tax management to the demanding international standards of a multinational listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

As explained by Joaquim de Toca, founder of MUJI in Spain and Portugal:

“We needed a firm that understood the requirements of a multinational listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, capable of delivering accounting and tax services aligned with the group’s global standards. Adlanter was the partner that best met that need.”

The challenge was not only to comply with local regulations, but also to ensure consistency, reliability, and timeliness in financial reporting to the Japanese headquarters, within a highly demanding operational environment.

Accuracy, timeliness, and global coordination

From the outset of the collaboration, Adlanter took on the full management of statutory and internal accounting, tax services, and financial reporting for MUJI’s entities in Spain and Portugal.

Adaptability, technical rigor, and strict adherence to deadlines have been key to consolidating the relationship.

As de Toca highlights:

“For the Japanese, meeting deadlines and delivering accurate, high-quality information is essential, and Adlanter meets both with rigor.”

Additionally, in a multinational environment where coordination with international headquarters is key, Adlanter facilitates communication with teams in London and Japan thanks to its agility, clarity in communication, and high level of English, streamlining global reporting and control processes.

A key financial partner for MUJI’s growth

More than eight years after the collaboration began, Adlanter has established itself as MUJI’s main financial partner in the Iberian Peninsula, providing security, control, and operational peace of mind.

In the words of Joaquim de Toca:

“MUJI’s European headquarters often highlights that Adlanter is the best financial partner we have in Europe.”

In an environment where the company operates in countries such as France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Finland, the collaboration with Adlanter in Spain stands out for its consistency, efficiency, and sustained quality.

Thanks to this support, MUJI Spain can focus all its efforts on business development, sales, and customer experience, with the reassurance of having a highly reliable financial partner.
